The Pipe Rolls

The Pipe Rolls are financial records held by the Exchequer, dating from the twelfth century. They were early audits by the Exchequer. Pipe rolls record payments made to government, debts owed to the Crown and expenditure of royal officials.

Various sheets of parchment were fixed together and rolled tightly for storage, looking like a pipe, from which the name derives. Rotulus is the Latin for roll.

Pipe Rolls cover the period 1129 to 1832. The earliest surviving single roll dates from 1129–1130 (reign of Henry I), and a continuous series runs from 1155 onward through the medieval period.

The National Archives at Kew hold pipe rolls 1130 to 1300 (Collection E 372 and E 352 for Chancellor Rolls, which are duplicates with some variations) and has a more detailed guide.

The Pipe Roll Society publishes Pipe Rolls.
